The Darkest Night by Gena Showalter
3.0
I'm actually torn on my rating and am leaning towards more of a 3.5 because while I enjoyed the next novel in the series a lot more, I barely ever put this one down. Admittedly some of the cheesier moments had me groaning, including the speed at which things occurred, and I know that to get the full character and world building I desire I have to read more of the series, just because that's how it's laid out, but I don't have too much of a problem with that. I would just like to have seen a bit more in the first book as a general set up for the rest of the series so I wouldn't have to rely on the next books as much. And while I didn't dislike either Ashlyn or Maddox, neither were characters that I particularly related to or desired, but all in all I generally enjoyed devouring it as an entertaining romance and do want to read the rest of the series, especially those about the Lords I did find more intriguing from a distance. Would recommend to someone as a "I'm just going to sit back and read something fun today, but a bit of gore and drama would be nice" kind of book.
