An entertaining guide through the frankly unremittingly bleak history of 20th Century Romania, a country that seems to have been constantly benighted by bad luck and worse leaders. The references to Dracula were sometimes a bit much, and you could tell the author was particularly interested in the grotesques of the Ceausescu family (understandably they are fascinatingly monstrous). All in all a pacy and readable account of one of Europe's least discussed countries.
