The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton
4.0

My regard for Edith Wharton is as high as ever, but I have never disliked a main character more than Undine Spragg -- and that is saying quite a lot. Throughout the entire book (yes the entire book) I waited for something awful to happen that would stop Undine before she hurt one more character. My final hope is that Undine is an exaggerated fictional figment of Wharton's rich imagination and not a fictionalized version of a real person of that, or any, time in history.
