Orientalism by Edward W. Said

challenging informative slow-paced

3.5

Really interesting but written in a way that is really inaccessible. We read it in our theory book club and all of us had problems getting through the (very long) chapters. It was kind of hard to distinguish the important points out of the long passages that give historical or biographical input. There are a lot of quotes that are left untranslated, some of them take up half a page.
The prologue was very good and explained averything really well, the last chapter tied everything together, but I honestly couldn’t tell you what was said in ch 1 to 3. It makes me kind of said that theoretical books are often written in a way that makes them inaccessible for non-academic readers. Political theory should be for everyone.
