Where Am I Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame
by Mara Wilson
Because of her occasionally angry and sarcastic Twitter, I wasn't sure if I would love or hate Mara Wilson's memoir, but decided to give it a chance. I was surprised at how good a storyteller she is. Her stories are very ordinary coming of age stories, despite her background in movies. Despite the fact that about half her stories were ordinary high school ones (dealing with mean girls, first break-up) I felt like I was transported back into that world, where those small slights were more important than anything else.
Though she has less to say than Trevor Noah in his memoir, I think she stands in his league as far as storytelling goes. She's relatable and listening to her narration of the memoir felt like tuning in to the missive of a long-lost friend.
