Interesting book set an elite girls' school in the hills of Rwanda during the late 70s, between Rwandan independence and the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The author does a great job showing the mounting tensions in the country, playing out between teenage girls and the people around them. The writing didn't totally engage me, which might be due to the translation, but while I found the themes super interesting and well done, I never really connected to the characters. The ending was almost a gut-punch, but the way it was conveyed significantly lessened the impact for me.
