rikoshai 's review for:
Revolutionary Road
by Richard Yates
I think an alternative title to this book could be Self Loathing & Entitlement In Suburbia. I adore how Mr. Yates was able to "takedown" suburban family life, while also lampooning people who do "takedowns." Everyone either hates themselves or thinks they're better than everyone else or both.
I came to the book after seeing the movie twice. I was smitten with the dialogue in the movie (imagine my pleasure to find that my favorite lines were lifted directly from the book), and decided to take a deep dive into the prose. Yates has an incredible ability to use the most poetic, deep language to describe ordinary things without it ever feeling overdramatic.
I adored this story even when I did not care for the characters in it.
