Smitherman knocks it out of the park once again. Unsettling, sexy, unsettlingly sexy. And with a twist I felt coming in my gut but wasn’t actually able to predict.
Now having read her third horrormance novella, I can also confidently say that Smitherman’s lead characters don’t feel too much alike to me. They’re all enduring similarly disturbing breaks from reality and euphoric sexual encounters, but their reactions feel unique from one another.
Thrum still tops the charts for me, though. If I were an editor my feedback would be “get even freakier with it.” I think readers’ tolerance level for really hideously twisted stuff is higher than some authors think.
