Kursk: The Greatest Battle. Lloyd Clark by Lloyd Clark
4.0
This is a superb book. Although entitled "Kursk" the first part covers the run up to the war in both Germany and the Soviet Union, and provides sufficient background for the general reader. (albeit in a slightly cursory way with some slightly iffy conclusions if you're reasonably familiar with it).
Once the action gets going though it is superb. A heavy reliance on eyewitness testimony coupled with a strong sense of narrative mean that you are left with a real feeling for the flow of events. as they were experienced by the people involved, but with a sense of how the action fits into the overall strategic picture as well.
In short an excellent introductory history of both Kursk and the war on the Eastern Front. Couple with Antony Beevor's "Stalingrad" (and perhaps also his "Berlin: The Downfall") it makes a great foundation for studying the military history of the war between Germany and Russia.
