The Puppets of Spelhorst by Kate DiCamillo
4.0

The Puppets of Spelhorst follows 5 puppets: a boy, a girl, a king, an owl, and a wolf. They can speak to each other and reveal their hopes in their conversations, the owl observing, “We each contain multitudes.” After changing hands of a few sad adults, the puppets are gifted to two young girls, Emma, and Martha. Emma writes a play for them to star in based off a letter found in the trunk that the puppets are gifted in. The play speaks to the hopes and the nature of the puppets, and the regrets of adults, moving those in the audience. Lovely fairytale told with whimsy and wisdom, with beautiful black and white illustrations throughout. I think this would be a good story to read aloud.
