The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux

4.0

I’ve watched the movie when I was younger but I don’t remember what the story was about.

The writing is just amazing. It almost feels like I, myself, is in the Opera House walking its halls. The haunted house, the spaces between the walls, the entire underground lair - It just feels too real. I had to Google if it was indeed real or fiction.

The prose is simple yet utterly powerful and beautiful. I was rooting for the phantom at first. I just find Raoul a bit annoying and too melodramatic. But then his house of horrors came to light and I just wanted Christine to escape and be free.

All the phantom really wanted was for someone to love him for what he is but due to his frightful appearance, not even his own mother loved him. Loneliness dominates his soul and in his yearning to be loved, he has resorted to unspeakable evil. The phantom has lived his life unloved and alone. It doesn’t excuse his actions but I still feel sorry for him.

Is it bad that I still didn’t like Raoul even in the end?
