i really liked this! and i read it in just two sittings, which is always a good sign. i definitely want to check out more of this author's work.

what i liked:
- cordelia's curiosity and strength. for such a sheltered character, she's feels very real, and i liked that her inner monologue and emotion-driven decision-making actually felt like that of a young teenage girl because a lot of fantasy books make teenage characters sound and act so much older.
- hester and cordelia's friendship. intergenerational kinship among women is life-saving in every universe, and they were so sweet.
- the writing was surprisingly witty! i didn't expect to laugh out loud while reading such a dark book.

a few small things that bothered me:
- i dont love
automatically knowing and understanding the villain right from the beginning of a book, because it lowers the stakes for me a little bit. but i understand that this is common for fairtytales and therefore makes sense in a retelling

- evangeline's character felt
kind of...flimsy? archetypal? cartoon villain? to me. if your whole goal in life is to have your daughter marry a wealthy man, why shelter her like that? why raise her like that? why abuse her like that? i struggled to understand her motivations and found myself making a ton of assumptions that im not sure im right about.
