The Big Sleep
by Raymond Chandler
Well, let me just say this didn't really age well. Misogyny, homophobia and physical abuse are front and center. All the women are tramps, whether they are rich or poor. Luckily, there's Marlowe to slap them back into line. The fact that Marlowe standands out as the only character with any moral fortitude says a lot about how dark the tone of this book is.
That said, I can see how this book and the character of Marlowe got so popular. There's snappy writing full of the street vernacular of the day. With Marlowe not being the strong silent type, there is plenty of room to jab and tease with witty lines and dark sarcasm. There's action car chases, fistfights, and gunfire. There's murder and mystery. There's a dark, complex, racy plot containing pornography and organized crime. Entertaining fun.
