Mosquito Man by Jeremy Bates
3.0
I really enjoyed the first 4/5ths of this. The characters were good fun and I enjoyed their interactions.
However, once Ellie is kidnapped things quickly fell apart. Rex is killed off with little fanfare - I’m assuming this was for shock value, but it just fell flat. Tabitha then attempts suicide despite not knowing the fate of her daughter in a move that felt very out of character.
The Mosquito Man (Men) was a crap villain. The brief explanation at the end could have been fleshed out throughout, but I think the larger issue was that there wasn’t much of a ‘legend’ to begin with. Other than a brief (but excellent) chapter on sightings in the small town, the reveal that a human-sized mosquito was committing the murders felt silly. Maybe I should have taken the title of the book more literally.
Still, I very much liked the punchy writing style and am looking forward to reading more from the author.
