Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely

I was disappointed. I *really* wanted to love this book. And while the world-building was there and the characters were fun, it just never felt like more than a fictional world to me...which is, of course, what it was. But when I'm deeply immersed in a really well-done YA Fantasy, I want to forget that it's fiction at all. I want to feel the urgency of the moment and hold my breath as the characters face whatever awaits!

My biggest complaint? I feel like the main character, Pity, lacked agency. Everything and everyone around her were taking action and moving their own stories forward. Except for her. She was a product of circumstance at every turn. And, I so desperately wanted her to kick ass.

It was a good book. And entertaining. But I didn't make the connection to the characters and to the story the way I really craved. I doubt I will pick up the sequel. I just didn't love it the way I hoped.
