172 Hours on the Moon
by Johan Harstad
Lemme clarify a couple things.
Firstly, the reason I'm giving this book 4 stars is because I just absolutely love the idea that the moon is hell. Like, wow. It's so original and although it wasn't really a big aspect of the book, that concept was so exciting.
The second reason I'm giving this 4 stars is because I feel like this would be a really good movie, and if it ever became one I would totally go see it, even though I hate horror movies.
Overall, I feel like this was a good experience for me. Although I didn't exactly love the writing - okay, let's be real, I don't know if it's because of the translation but it was really awful - and there were bajillions and bajillions of plot holes ()
update: sorry I didn't finish this review earlier LOL I had school and then rehearsal and I just got home. HERE WE GO AGAIN
Sooooooooooooooo
I definitely have a lot of questions and this book is certainly not a literary masterpiece but it was a fun ride and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The more I think about it, the more I realize that it wasn't exactly SCARY, but it was definitely creepy and made me very paranoid. I would recommend this to people who don't care much about character development and plot, and who just want a fun book to read.
On that note, let's discuss the characters!
Mia was just unbearable. She was the perfect stereotypical example of a rebellious punk teenager who doesn't appreciate the opportunities she is given () and she just really frustrated me.
Similarly, Antoine was very annoying. He helped a bit for comedic relief,, so I didn't really have a chance to get to know and appreciate his character more.
Midori was the only one that I was remotely interested in. Out of all the kids, her reason seemed the most logical to me for wanting to leave. But, similarly, this book really didn't give me a chance to get to know her character.
Basically, the character development in this book SUCKS. A lot. And so does the general plot and all the holes in it. And I may as well throw the writing into the trash pile too, because that was pretty horrid. But if you're someone who doesn't really care about any of those things and just wants a fun, fast book to read, then this is definitely the book for you. I'm glad this is the novel that I used to dip my feet into the waters of horror, and I have a feeling I'm going to be picking up more space-horror books in the near future.

Spoiler
the whole thing with the doppelgangers was HORRIBLY unexplained. Why were they there? How were they able to survive the pressure/heat/etc? Were they aliens or like what even were they? Why were Mia's last few chapters, even though it turned out that she was a doppelganger, written as though she weren't one? Too many plot holes and they honestly hurt my brain to think about.update: sorry I didn't finish this review earlier LOL I had school and then rehearsal and I just got home. HERE WE GO AGAIN
