President James Buchanan: A Biography by Philip Shriver Klein

Very thorough account of Buchanan's long--and I do mean looooong--political career before he finally became president at age 66. Persuasively argues that he faced an impossible position during his administration, hamstrung by an infighting Congress that didn't want to give up political advantages to actually keep the Union together. Filled with lots of details on PA state politics, but still pretty readable. Will be interesting to see how he comes off when I start reading Lincoln biographies...
