The Will of the Many
by James Islington
Now the fast paced plot did keep me invested and a flew through this book. But it did feel quite empty. It was all plot and nothing else. And no interesting female characters or much character development. Basically Vis is an orphan and former prince of Suus which was defeated three years ago by the Catenan Republic. He’s doing everything to avoid ceding his will which what the whole society runs on, siphoning the power of others in this pyramidal societal structure. But Vis is running out of time to his 18th birthday. He gets discovered by a Quintus who needs him as a spy at the Academy which is run by Religion to see what shady things are going on there and why his brother died five years ago. To prepare him he gets trained by this woman. Once at the Academy he rises the ranks until he makes it to top, Rank 3, and has to participate in the final test which takes place on an island that gets taken over by this rebel group called the anguis that have no real political agenda except wanting to kill everyone. Vis does some snooping on this island, successfully runs the labyrinth which is this weird challenge that he’s been training for this whole book. He reaches some other realm but then flees, but loses his arm. He tries to save his friends, but then the girl he likes tries to kill him, but he somehow survives
I’d be interested in knowing what happens in the next book, but I probably won’t actually read it.
