elizabitch 's review for:
Agnes at the End of the World
by Kelly McWilliams
ahhhhh!!!! Type 1 diabetes rep! And it's well researched!!! And fits into the story! And they don't die! And it's an apocalypse story (we never survive those!!)
!!!!!!!!!
The religion turned spirituality could definitely very off putting to readers. I was hesitant reading it, expecting Agnes to throw off religion after her cult's terrors are revealed to her. But she reshapes that religion into a spirituality that she still needs. It was a different read for me, and I recognized that part of it wasn't for me (the diabetes was lol) but it is for someone.
However, her "powers" granted by her god, the god-voice she hears, and the "test" makes me more uncomfortable, is too near (for me) to saying that god exists (he doesn't.) Those aspects still play into a brutal, cruel, uncaring god existing, which the story is also trying to refute, so it left me confused. And we're not given a final answer - she "sees" the meaning behind all the suffering but we are not included into that insight.
The romance was insta-love and made no sense, it did not need to be in the book at all. The making out came outta nowhere.
I liked this! The chapters are short, which makes for quick reading. Different. Apocalyptic, dystopian, scifi, horror book.
