While I definitely enjoyed this book, it's also firmly set in the whole Nice Guy™ and Friend-zone mythology which, eh.
Which is not to say that women (or anybody, really, because why make this about women when I've seen PLENTY OF MEN go for the flashy partner over the nice shy partner) don't sometimes make poor relationship decisions, and that there aren't nice (actual nice) people sometimes who get passed up in favor of jerks when the nice (actual nice) person might've been a better fit. The Nice Guy™ in this book (which is kind of a romance and kind of science fiction but not solidly in either) is an actual nice guy, but it's a narrative that has me a little gun-shy at this point.
What I'm trying to say is that I'm getting tired of the "Here is the perfect man for you but you can't see that it's true because he just doesn't brush his hair and you're dating a jerk but soon he'll rescue you from all of these things and you will see that the guy you are dating is a jerk and you will fall in love with the nerdy awkward guy who is only saying those inappropriate things because he's trying to be helpful," sort of story. I am getting very tired of that, but I also quite like the Nice Guy™ in this book and rooted for him.
I liked it, but not enough to keep it.
