This book was a ride. I felt like I was thrashing to keep my head above water a little bit. The writing was phenomenal and the characters were horrible people. I feel kinda distant from June and Athena, like I don’t care about them at all. I liked the critique of publishing in the industry, the racism and the loneliness that comes with the fame. It felt like R. F Kuang was talking from her own experiences through June and Athena even Candice and Adele, about her own struggles within the industry. The saddest part though was reading about Athena’s mother and that man at the convention who didn’t speak English. I felt so bad for them, they were on my mind throughout the whole book. The fact that June wasn’t even able to confront and own up to her about what she did was so cruel in a very dark way. In those scenes it showed how far she was willing to go to be liked and known. It was despicable and so fascinating how her descent into madness just fir fame and her greed causing her downfall was illustrated. It was brilliant to read through and through, will definitely be reading more of hers
