The Beauty
by Aliya Whiteley
TW: Body Horror, Trypophobia
I was very lucky to read a copy that had both The Beauty and Peace, Pipe.
The Beauty:
This novel is there to fuck shit up. Fuck your genders, fuck your idea of humanity, fuck your idea of safety. All told in a much more elegant and literary way, of course. Uncle Ted managed to be my least favorite character as well as my favorite. The epitome of the folly of man, the wish-washy nature of someone who always wants to exude and take control without giving way to their actual beliefs on anything, or worse, knowing what they're doing is wrong but knowing it's the only way to keep control. Also the inevitable discussions on pro-choice is something I'd love to see someone write about in regard to this book.
Peace, Pipe:
This beautiful sci-fi horror continues the theme by telling you fuck your stereotypes and how you’ll choose to view me, I am the creator of my own story. A nonbinary story at its core, the beauty of delving into languages and how we communicate with one another, how we determine what is the most important thing we want to convey, and who deserves that communication is explored not only via a short story but also a very short timespan within said piece.
Friend or foe? Madness or innovation? We leave the worlds of Whiteley without ever knowing.
