Win Me Something by Kyle Lucia Wu follows Willa as she is dealing with loneliness and the longing for love & family. Willa is a 24-year-old half-Chinese half-white woman who becomes a nanny for a rich white family in Tribeca, New York. Throughout the entire novel, Willa feels disconnected from her real family due to her parents divorcing at a very young age. So when she starts nannying for this "perfect" family she begins to grapple with her upbringing and examine how her parents have affected her.
This story is written beautifully and features many relatable moments. I liked how the author discussed racial microaggressions and struggling to feel connected to your culture. However, since it is an extremely character-driven novel with minimal plot advancement at times it was difficult to read. Halfway through the book, it became a bit stagnant which I did not like. As someone who had high hopes for this book the ending was also a little disappointing for me.
Graphic: Racial slurs
