I really enjoy the way this author writes! I first picked up one of her books, The Raven series, many years ago and while I don’t remember a lot of details i remember the love I had for the series. I knew the Mercy Thompson books were out there but I wanted to wrap up a couple series before I dived into a new one and while I am still working through that series I decided to start this.
When I really like an author I don’t tend to read what a book is about before just diving in, so I was happily surprised to discover I’d be reading about Charles and his mate.
There was a definite buildup from the beginning of the book to the end with the FMC, her relationship with her mate, learning about omegas and what it means, and just learning more about a healthier pack life. There was also a progression of her being scared and intimidated but working through that to the point she is the one who ends up rescuing the men.
I’m kind of sad Walter was killed off so quickly. I definitely found myself wanting more time to get to know him. I also feel like the build up to the final battle was unbalanced compared to the ease with which she was ultimately killed. It’s beautiful she was punched in the face and knocked out but it just felt like there should’ve been a little bit of struggle between FMC and the witch before the knockout and death.
I am also picking up on a theme of petty, underhanded, passive-aggressive women in the different series. I don’t mind women being villains or having an antagonistic role in a story but I do find myself feeling frustrated when a pattern starts to emerge of women who fit a more misogynistic take on how women in certain roles behave.
