Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky

4.0

Still a great follow up of the first, still continuing a universe I fell in love with, still a standout novel by a great author.

However.

It just can't reach the level of the first book. Don't get me wrong, the story itself was gripping and having octopods is a better idea in principle than spiders due to their true to life intelligence. You almost knew the outcome before the book really got past the first 50 pages. A unfortunate as it sounds, a few months later and I have found the first novel to be more memorable in story. I would say the characters are more fleshed out and thus you feel more connected. But I can't stop myself from saying the first one was just better in every other field. That's not to say it isn't worth reading, because lovers of the first can still get something out of it.
