Why did it take me SOOO long to read this book?! Oh, I know… because it’s MASSIVE! This was a buddy read but life kind of got crazy and I ended up finishing in the last week and a half. I just couldn’t stop anymore. haha. I was recently watching Becca and the Books from youtube and she talked about re-thinking how you think of tomes. instead of the size, think of the amazing world building and characters you get to enjoy. She’s so right!

BRIDGE FOUR, BRIDGE FOUR, BRIDGE FOUR, BRIDGE FOUR!! Oh my gosh… I don’t think I’ve ever loved a group of people more. ❤

I will try so hard for this to make sense. My emotions are just all over the place with this one. Talk about a book hangover!

This book is basically about war. I can see how that can be not so fun to read about. I’m not going to lie this is not a fast paced book. I don’t think you want it to be though. You really need to take your time and just let it all sink in. There’s so much foreshadowing here, I know that I won’t be able to remember it all! This book is SO dense and I’m not going to sugar coat that. It’s a lot but it’s so worth it, I promise.

The world building in this book is massive and so insane, in a good way. If you are not a person who enjoys this, you are in for a tough read, I think. The way he paints this world is terrifying and amazing. I highly recommend the edition with the artwork inside. I really enjoyed those! There’s so much world building that I still have so many questions that weren’t even touched! He would introduce something and then you don’t see it again until the end of the book or not even then. I’m not mad.. that’s what the next book is for. I’m just trying to point out, there’s so much of it and it’s basically what this book is, like most fantasies.

The characters… oh gosh.. KALADIN!! I fell in love with him from the beginning. His chapters were definitely my favorite. His story arch is just so heartbreaking and beautiful. He’s flawed but to the core he’s such a good and honorable man. BRIDGE FOUR! haha.. I can’t stop. I’m obsessed with them! If you read this book and don’t love them then you have no soul. haha.

Also, I loved this quote so much! It really applies to the world right now too.

“And his father’s voice seemed to whisper a reply. Somebody has to start, son. Somebody has to step forward and do what is right, because it is right. If nobody starts, then others cannot follow.”

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Dalinar at first. I think because he’s the one that’s in the middle of the war. I wasn’t as interested in his character but oh. my. gosh. By the end of the book, I’m a fan. Big. Fan. He’s spending so much of this book in agony, really. He’s trying to live by the codes, trying to groom his son to takeover, trying to figure out if he’s going crazy, and constantly fighting the other highprinces to win this war. The ending… I can’t say … but so good.

Shallan is another of the main characters but we get a lot less chapters about her. I don’t know, I wasn’t really too attached to her character. It could be because we don’t get as much. She’s got a lot of secrets, I really can’t wait to know them in the following books. She’s witty but she knows it and kind of makes her arrogant at times. Overall though, I’m hoping to know more about her and her story. Her internal conflict throughout her chapters made her more appealing though.

Szeth- We get the LEAST about him but oh gosh.. I feel so very bad for him. That’s all.

Guys, I know this is such a chunky book but if you love high fantasy and amazing world building and characters, please pick it up. It’s so good. The journey these characters are on can be so depressing at times but there’s always light at the end. This was my first Sanderson book and I’m a fan!
