The book is divided into three sections and show the underworld of Harlem from three different timelines and plot lines. The three sections intersect intermittently; but, overall show the life and times of Ray Carney and his involvement in the less than savory side of life as a black man, business owner, and family man. The things one does to make a name for themselves tends to have a way of catching up to you, one way or another. The intricacies of life in Harlem in the 50s-70s is plagued with hardship, growth, and the realization that things will never be what they used to be; but, will, somehow, always be the same. Crime evolves, business evolves, people evolve; but, Harlem stays the same in the end.
Part two of this book, was a tad slow (still, incredibly well written), which led to my procrastination of finishing part three. Parts one and three were fast paced, well written, and incredibly thought provoking.
This book is a sequel to “Harlem Shuffle;” but, can be read as a stand alone.
Colson Whitehead does it again. Truly. His ability to capture the raw emotions and inner workings of each character is astounding. He takes you into their psyche and crafts a story that envelopes you as if you were experiencing the book firsthand.
