I am trying to read more classics and one of the first authors I want to reread is Jane Austen. This is the third of her books that I have made it through for the second time. Northanger Abbey was the one that I had the hardest time remembering. After rereading it I think the reason why is perhaps I have tried to block it out because it is my least favorite of her works. I realize that many people consider this to be her best as a writer and under appreciated but I am not one of those people. We follow Catherine the oldest daughter of a middle learning family who is perfectly pleasing without any great accomplishments. She is invited to spend a few weeks with a neighbor in Bath which she is beyond excited about it. When she arrives she soon become friends with the Thorpe's (brother and sister). She enjoys their company and soon becomes friends with another brother/sister duo in the Tilney's. This new relationship causes the Thorpe's to become jealous and to try to get her to break away from her new friend group. The cattiness of the Thorpe's did amuse me. Along the way there are some romances and Catherine is invited to stay with the Tilney's at their home called Northanger Abbey. This portion lost me and I was very bored. This is supposed to be making fun of the Gothic era but it really feel flat. Perhaps this is because I love the Gothic novel and am always looking for another book to curl up with. To sum up I was bored for the majority of the book and none of the characters were that interesting to me.
