The Girl Who Wrote in Silk
by Kelli Estes
Dear The Girl Who Wrote in Silk—
I liked many parts of you, the history, the way you evoked a sense of place on that Pacific Northwest island, the way you moved through time and had a mystery to keep me interested. Joseph’s and MeiLien’s were my favorite sections. I liked Daniel Chin too, but seriously, doesn’t everyone?? Inarra was just so underwhelming as a character. She could have been so much more vibrant and dynamic, and she just fell so flat. If she didn’t have the sleeve to entice Professor Chin that would clearly have gone nowhere. She needed some of the independence, resilience and spark that MeiLien had in her personality. So... I give you three stars which for me means—it was just okay. If this had simply been a story about what happened in the late 19th century, it would have been a better reading experience for me. I can’t win them all.
Sincerely,
A Reader Who Values Good Characters.
