The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
3.0
adventurous dark mysterious reflective sad medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I loved The Final Empire, the first book in this trilogy, but didn’t like the next two as much. There was too much repetition, and the Ruin / Preservation conflict wasn’t original. There were so many elements to the story after 2000+ pages that Sanderson was hard-pressed to create a satisfying ending.

What I liked about the trilogy: the character development; the unusual and frightening Inquistors, Obligators, koloss, and kandra; the tight friendships of the original crew; Allomancy itself. I especially liked the characters of TenSoon and Sazed, plus obviously Vin, a great heroine. The ending was too tidy given all that had come before.

The story bogged down in the destruction of the world, as bogged down as people trying to move through the ever deepening ash. I thought Allrianne was added to satisfy a need for more female characters and that her relationship with Breeze diminished him.

Despite my mixed feelings about this book, I loved the trilogy as a whole. Now that I’m finished, I’ll miss these characters.
