Blackout picks up where Deadline finished – the shocking return of George (though you learn right off the bat that she isn’t exactly the George we knew and loved). The chapters of this book alternate point of views – George’s experiences as CDC captive and Shaun’s adventures as CDC fugitive – until they inevitably (literally) crash back into each other’s lives. Up to that point, I loved every aspect of the book. Afterwards, I did feel that George’s voice was missing a key George quality. That may have been a deliberate choice on the author’s part, but I felt it detracted from the book a bit. I’m also still struggling to accept the true nature of George and Shaun’s relationship; the whole thing seemed like a forced decision and not something that would have naturally developed. Still, all 632 pages of Blackout were filled with sideways surprises, tenuous twists and that transfixed me until I answered the ultimate question: who lived and who died in the team’s final search for the truth. For someone who has spent years shunning the whole zombie genre, these were three books I cannot recommend enough!
