The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion
2.0
It took me SOOOO much longer to read this one than it took me to read the first one. I don't know if that was because I had so many other books to read in between, but I think it was because this one just didn't pull me in like the first one. The first one seemed fun and different...this one got on my nerves a bit. What made the first one so great was seeing how Rosie and Don interacted and how Don made her a little more organized and she made him a little less so. This one seemed overly Don-centric.
The whole "their marriage was falling apart" thing seemed ridiculous. They had never had a fight. They had never discussed it. She was just moving home and they were going to break up. If it was that easy, why in the heck did you get married in the first place?!? It was all just so stupid. Really Rosie?!? I understand that raising a child with Don would seem daunting, but isn't there a reason you married him?!? Why would you not think about this BEFORE you got pregnant!! It kind of took away from what I loved about the first one :( I also did not really find Don's predicaments all that funny this time around-jokes about him being mistaken for a sexual predator, as a terrorist?!? Come on, Simsion, you can do better than that.
Don was still Don and I liked him. His cast of friends have grown and they are likable but this book was missing the relationship that was in the first one. Don and Rosie were on different pages from day one. If there are more books in this series, I would like to see a better balancing act...less Don...more Rosie. Otherwise, I don't think I can read anymore of them.
