This is one of those "throw you in and leave you to figure out what's going on" scifi novels. Characters are referred to by multiple names. Past events are mentioned that we never see or have any context for. The story itself takes several right turns in the plot and becomes about something else. It's worth pushing through as some of the explored concepts are interesting but don't expect a clearly laid out plot.
