The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman
Maybe it was because this was young adult, or maybe the story didn't strike as much of a cord with me as I was hoping. I went into this book having no idea what it was about and let it relatively satisfied. From a writing standpoint, Gaiman did a bang-up job and the piece is rather complete. From a personal aesthetics point of view, I felt the story was lacking... substance. All of the thrills, mysteries, and supernatural aspects were either overly obvious and easy to guess the plot twists, or not thrilling enough. I felt like a lot of the action was off screen with the Sailas fellow, and the reader missed out on a lot of potential rising action/high stakes building.
I'm not sure if I'd recommend this book to anyone else to read. I was a little disappointed but I'm beginning to expect a lot more from what I read. It's a light and fluffy read, not much commitment, and a little too easy to put down for my liking. Perhaps a younger audience would enjoy it more.
