Connection Error by Annabeth Albert

5.0

I was so excited to read Annabeth Albert's new book, 'Connection Error'... right up until the introduction notes mentioned it was the final book in the series!

As a queer, disabled, nerdy adult, married to another queer, disabled, nerd, it is really amazing to seee two disabled main characters with realistic and well-researched portrayals of their disability. People with disabilities can always tell when authors bother to actually do their research, and talk to disabled people about their experiences, rather than just assume what our lives are like.

Because it is not just the medical stuff. It is the social implications that affect you the most. Nobody tells you when you become disabled, how much longer everything takes when you leave the house, mostly because you need to plan ahead for access difficulties. How you are made to feel invisible when people assume you are also intellectually impaired. How people always address the person you are with like you don't exist, and assume they are you carer. THIS is what so many people, including authors, don't seem to get. And Annabeth Albert got it.

While I would love to see Albert write more novels featuring nerdy gamers, I would love to see her write other books with realistic portrayals of disability too. There are surprisingly few authors who get it right, and Albert's work in Connection Error will serve as a role model to others.
