despite having an extremely unlikeable protagonist and an almost plotless story, it was somehow difficult not to become completely enthralled in reading. the absence of a strong and linear narrative cast a dark, reflective atmosphere throughout the book, structurally mimicking the mental state of a woman overcome by depression. this effect is furthered by moshfegh’s confessional and personal narrative voice which triggered a visceral response in me, leaving me feeling wholly involved with the novel.
