My Year of Rest and Relaxation, by Ottessa Moshfegh

challenging dark reflective slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

despite having an extremely unlikeable protagonist and an almost plotless story, it was somehow difficult not to become completely enthralled in reading. this effect seems to be created by moshfegh’s almost confessional and personal narrative voice which triggered a visceral response in me, leaving me feeling wholly involved with the novel.
