I just lost faith in the characters, and there wasn't enough world building to keep me going.
I should have guessed this wasn't going to be the book for me when our FMC hopes a new ruler will simultaneously cut taxes and provide more funding for teachers and libraries. She's uncommitted to a rebellion, sweet on a man who - even if you ignore the thing that gave him his name - is an aggressive pos and is uncritically accepting of. She's just very along for the ride and I'm not feeling it. She's so along for the ride that she accepts ridiculous behaviour on the part of MMC with barely a hint of an apology and to be honest the more I think about this the more annoyed I am.
Everyone in this weird volcanic fake Ireland deserved better.
