The Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove
5.0

What would happen if warriors from a past era obtained modern weaponry in the midst of a war they were losing? That's what happens to Confederate General Robert E. Lee when he is approached by men in mottled green clothing who demonstrate a rifle with the ability to fire dozens of rounds in mere seconds. It is called, they say, the AK-47 and they can provide as many weapons and rounds of ammunition as Lee could ever possibly imagine.

Sure, the concept has been done before but I'd argue not nearly as well and with such attention to historical detail as Turtledove does here. Told from two independent points of view with omniscient knowledge -- that of Lee and of Confederate Sergeant Nate Caudell -- we get to see just how the new weapon affects both the soldiers and the officers in charge. We also see several years into a revised future and the effect that this change has on what we know to be the aftermath of the US Civil War.

Yes it took me two years to read but that is not a reflection on the book at all, but on how busy and scatterbrained I was. I highly recommend this book.
