Alien Clay is an odd mix of being too dull for me to get into it yet just interesting enough to keep on going. The language is very deliberately conversational, but there's no flowery language or atmosphere as a result, which as it's set on the ruins of a the planet of murderous alien parasites, you would hope for a bit more flair.
None of the characters are especially interesting on their own, but how they all interact on what is essentially a prison colony makes up for it. It's a very accessible book to read, but nothing unique within the genre.
