Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land

3.0

This is a memoir about a single mom living in poverty.

I have mixed feelings about this book. There were a lot of things I could relate to, like the embarrassment of using food assistance and not knowing where you’ll live after a relationship ends. I know what it’s like to have to do a job nobody else wants in order to make ends meet. Sometimes it really does seem like the system is designed to keep you poor.

That being said, the amount of times Stephanie said “not that I could afford it anyway” became redundant. It seemed like she spent a lot of the memoir judging everyone who had more than her. Even if they struggled like she did, they still had something that she didn’t.

There was something missing for me. Something that kept me from feeling fully invested in his story.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a better understanding of how the system works, but if you’re looking for an inspirational memoir this probably isn’t it.
