The Blood Gospel
by James Rollins
This is certainly a different kind of book. It falls into the religious quest adventure category with other books such as Angels and Demons and The DaVinci Code. The Catholic Church and its tendencies for secret societies falls victim again to the imagination of a pair of clever writers.
I usually really like this kind of book. I like the different ideas of what religious symbols and traditions mean and from where they came. However, I'm not sure that I'm able to buy the idea in this book. I like fantasy, but this may just be a bit too much for even me. I won't say what the different idea is, you'll find that out about chapter 17 or so. And the weird thing is one of the main characters.... Not sure.
I also thought that some of the clues were a bit contrived. It seemed awfully easy to determine which bunker to look in. And when the nasty historical figure shows up, you just know that he's going to betray the trio. It is so not surprising.
Despite all that, I read the whole book. And I'll probably read the next in the Sanguines series. That means that despite the problems that I had with the book, I still liked it, or I'm just a glutton for punishment. Suitable for fans of thrillers, quest-adventures and religious fictions.
