Beverly by Nick Drnaso

When I don’t give a book a star rating, it doesn’t mean I’m rating it a zero. Sometimes I rate, sometimes I don’t, and sometimes I review without a rating. I’m compelled to rate “Beverly” for at least myself to remember the experience of having read “Sabrina” before it, a book by Nick Drnaso that I had a positive experience with.

I actually bought this book full-price. Why? A number of good reasons. I was wowed by “Sabrina” and, after learning a bit more about Drnaso, I saw high praise for “Beverly”. I wanted to support an author. I couldn’t find the book available to check out any of my apps (Libby, Hoopla, or Comixology/Kindle) anyways so I wanted to support my local comic book shop.

“Sabrina” was riveting. That’s the kind of descriptor that drew me to read “Beverly”, though, so it’s all a risk!

I didn’t care for some of the language in the book.

The illustration style, which I generally like, made it hard to distinguish some of the characters and understand if I was following the same characters chapter to chapter (which I could get by the names but it was still confusing). It was unsettling from time to time but also confusing in a not fun way.

This read to me like an earlier work by the author and it was. I’d recommend “Sabrina” instead of this as your first Drnaso book.
