This book is mostly Glokta. If there ever was a character more cynical and more badass than Glokta, then I'd want to know about that character.
Now that I think about it, of all the books I've read, only one dude comes close to Glokta in terms of sheer bitterness and ruthlessness in execution. Probably Jorg from Prince of Thorns.
Should you read Before They Are Hanged? Of fucking course. If you've read book 1, this is a must read. If you've not read The Blade Itself, then you need to do yourself a favor and get down to reading that book.
To be a fantasy fan and not read Joe Abercrombie is an absolute shame! Fix that before it's too late.
