I loved that while time travel is how the story happens, it isn’t central to the actual plot. Butler makes you wrestle with what choices were or weren’t available to enslaved Americans as well as free Black Americans. At the end, not every white character is redeemed and not everyone has a happy ending but I really appreciated that choice by Butler to show the harsh and truthful reality of a slavery society.
