Six Crimson Cranes
by Elizabeth Lim
Six Crimson Cranes is an excellent novel! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it but didn't realize that it was going to be the start of a series. While that isn't a strike against the book, it did make the ending feel incomplete in a way that made the story unsatisfying. It felt as though there were references to things that I didn't understand, but they had to be new so I'm unsure why I don't know them.
The characters were compelling and really struck the dynamic of having many siblings/a large family without it feeling too artificial. The romance felt natural and well-developed. The political intrigue is shallow but interesting enough that it compliments the character development. Another thing I enjoyed was that despite the variety of sibling characters they all support each other, no matter how much they disagree. So frequently sibling characters conflict purely for no reason other than the fact that they're siblings.
A warning though that this novel has many plot twists and many of them come towards the end. I don't know if this novel would be as compelling without them, but simultaneously having so many together made them feel cheaper than if they had been spaced out. But if you enjoy reveals, then this is the book for you.
