Dark Glitter by C.M. Stunich, Tate James

4.0

Dark Glitter was definitely a darker read. I found the characters and the plot to be very interesting, not your typical biker or faerie type of read.
The heroine, Ciarah, was brutally murdered and, in death, sentenced to endure horrific torture for another five years. Its actually interesting because now that I think about it, I'm not sure if it was explained how she escaped to end up in that alley... might have to go back and reread that or maybe that's just a mystery to be revealed in another book. Anyway, Ciarah is essentially reincarnated as the Veil Keeper, an ancient fae goddess, but aspects of her personality remain, merging with the goddess throughout the book. Her job is to lead the Wild Hunt to track down criminals and bring them to justice, and to control the veil so the fae on earth can cross back into their home realm.
Unfortunately, the previous Keeper locked away the knowledge Ciarah needs to accomplish this. But, she's not entirely alone. Every Keeper has her knights, and Ciarah is starting to choose her own.
Ciarah was such a great character. She endured so much abuse for so long, even during her human life, but the reincarnation really helped to put her life in perspective. She has horrific flashbacks as her memory returns in pieces, but she's not just a twenty-something human. She is a fae goddess. She isn't controlled by modesty or societal ideals. She knows what she wants and who she wants and isn't afraid to go after anything she desires. She chose Reese, Killian, and Arlo as her knights because she wanted them and they wanted her. As strong as she is, she also isn't afraid to show a little weakness to those she cares about. She didn't force Arlo, ever the reluctant one, to be her knight. She was even ready to give him up if he couldn't accept all of her. Ciarah is so totally herself and not at all ashamed. She demands that her men accept her for who she is, not just the perfect parts of her but the damaged as well. That's what really drew me to her as a character.
This book was intense. So much happened and its just the beginning. This book is dark and gritty and even though its a fantasy with fae and shifters and witches, the characters and their feelings are so relatable and understandable. The end of Dark Glitter shoves us into a new world and I'm interested to see where the authors will take us next!
