Beautiful Nightmares by K.J. Sutton

4.0

I love Fortuna, Laurie, Collith, and Oliver. I love Fortuna’s entire band of misfits, actually. I love this fresh take on the world of faerie, and it has been so fun watching Fortuna navigate it as she journeys through self-discovery. I’m so glad to have another installment of her story!

But, listen: this book is an absolute beast. I understand why the author needed to push the release date back — I would’ve actually supported more time and another big round of edits. Some scenes felt overwritten and dragged down the pacing, while a couple of critical scenes felt UNDERwritten and, consequently, lacked clarity. Continuity errors popped up, a couple of sentence fragments snuck in there that were left unresolved… it was a lot.

If I pull back and look at the plot points and the characterization, it’s still a great story. That’s ultimately why it still earns 4 stars for me. It’s still immersive, inventive, engaging, and everything I want out of this genre. Writing is hard. I think the author just needed a more aggressive editor in her corner, and it could’ve been that much better. I’m still a Fortuna fan and can’t wait to see where her next book will take her!
