This was such a dissapoinitng read because it had the perfect recipe of being spicy while at the same time having a plot and delving deeper into the characters' feelings and emotions. The entire book can be summarised into one singular word: smut.
Now, I'm not going to deny that the sex scenes themselves were quite hot, but they felt like porn to me because there was no emotional connection between Natalie and Roman. There was no communication between the 2 of them besides like the last few chapters, but by that time, it was already too late. I just simply cannot understand how Natalie started to love Roman when she knew virtually nothing about him. He was such a dick to her as well and Natalie was such a dumb bitch for putting up with that shit.
Roman was so unlikable, and I really do understand where he's coming from with the shame of hiding his past and all that, but nobody owes him anything just because of his shitty childhood. Especially not Natalie. He expected so much trust and devotion from Natalie when he was not willing to give up anything himself. I firmly believe that people like this who are so guarded should not be in a relationship before working through their issues.
Natalie was not very likeable either because she was so indecisive and couldn't have a thought for herself once. I genuinely don't know how she was doing a PhD when she was so dumb. It's so ironic how, as soon as real danger with men is present, her weird man analysing system short circuits, and she can't think straight. With Roman, she was so lust driven that it was just unrealistic.
Oh, a stranger that I've never met before is telling me that my real dad is in Russia and is telling me to come with him. I've never met this man before and don't know what he might do to me. Of course I'll come with you on a plane and then when I discover you're part of the mafia I'll hope you fuck me and take my virginity in the middle of a cornfield. A totally normal reaction from our FMC.
Okay, your system might not work with Roman because he's the elusive, mysterious MMC that no one can read but what the fuck happened with Filip or whatever his name was. I just found it so weird how he was introduced as the cousin, and like the next second, everyone thought Natalie would want to get together with him. Like yes, let's just forget how they are literally family no matter how distant they may be and normalise incest. There was no need for the plot point of Filip being a cousin when he could have easily just been a close family friend.
It's dissapoinitng because there were no background details to build a full picture like why Natalie did not have a good relationship with her mum or what her degree actually consisted of. She always said she was walking through history when she was in an old building but was never curious enough to touch and explore and discover the secrets behind the antique walls. It's almost like the degree was just there to tell the reader Natalie is smart even though she was not showing any smarts throughout the book because the degree was not very important to the "plot" of the story.
There was a lot of telling and not very much showing throughout the prose, which made the writing boring and sometimes cringy. This book was trying too hard to be feminist and liberal especially with Jess. I honestly did not like Jess at all because she couldn't ever hold a serious conversation and always just encouraged Natalie to do what she thought was best and gave her bad advice. The conversations between the 2 were often cringy and I honestly hated how many exclamation marks there were in the writing.
There was very little variance in punctuation and yet so many exclamation marks which just made the writing even worse in my opinion.
Everything was just so surface level and it only got worse after the dad died. I was actually kind of enjoying the story before his death but after that, the relationship started going downhill and so did the book, and there was nothing that could save it.
I don't know if I should read more of this author's books because this had potential but it was bad at the same time as well.
