Moby-Dick: Or, the Whale by Herman Melville

5.0

Usually, I don't think of classic books as "fun reads". They're usually interesting, impressive, clever, but not fun. Moby Dick is a fun classic. The narrator is so obsessed with telling a great story, convincing you of the importance of whaling that it feels like a fun ride. Seeing all the things the narrator wants you to see, explaining what he wants you to think.

I didn't feel like I had to think very hard to know what the narrator wanting me to get from what he was talking about. (though the language can be a bit difficult to understand at times because this book is old).  The stuff the narrator points out is so silly and random at times that I can't help having fun with it.

You will learn a lot about whaling in the 1800, but from a very biased perspective. But it's obvious he's biased so you know not to take everything he says seriously.

The book can feel long, but I think that's part of the experience. The story takes place during a mundane 3 year sailing trip. It feels like we're trying to entertain ourselves for this long boring journey. It's an interesting concept for a book.

It's not one of my favorite classics, but it's a great book.
