Batman: Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth
by Grant Morrison
I've read this book 3 or 4 times now, and it really does need multiple reads to get a sense of what's going on (the annotated script in the special editions doesn't hurt either). But once you do get a handle on things, it really is a compelling, if not sometimes disturbing book. It builds a mythology around Arkham Asylum that would go on to inspire multiple forms of Batman media and it dives into the darkness of Batman's own damaged mind. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's got a lot for those who put in the work.
